Health experts are warning people of the dangers associated with consuming unpasteurized apple cider-the popular seasonal treat-as the fall season approaches.

Though it may look harmless, uncured cider contains dangerous bacteria that could imperil older citizens and children.

Apple cider is a festive seasonal drink many turn to as the crisp autumn air sets in. Public health officials across though, are educating consumers about the potential dangers of unpasteurized cider — a popular but sometimes treacherous alternative.

Unpasteurized cider is mostly sold at roadside stands, farmers’ markets, and local orchards. It is not pasteurized to remove harmful bacteria.

Although this raw cider has many natural tastes, it could contain harmful bacteria that can cause foodborne diseases especially in the young, old aged, pregnant women, or people whose immunity is compromised.

The Illinois Ogle County Health Department recently reminded about hazards on its social media account, pointing out also that many orchards do not pasteurize since it is not required.

“Apple cider that has NOT been pasteurized can contain harmful bacteria that can make people sick,” the article stated.

The CDC advises that customers boil unpasteurized cider for at least one minute if they decide to buy it. However, most customers may not know to take such precautionary measures, especially if cider is sold by the glass and warning labels are not required.

To avoid all possible health risks, health officials recommend that customers read the labels or ask questions before indulging in this festive fun.
