In what is being hailed as a landmark decision, U.S. President Joe Biden on Monday announced a 10-year plan to remove all lead pipes in the nation’s cities, thereby protecting Americans’ drinking water from contamination.

The ambitious plan, which was driven as much with considerations for public health as with access and sensitivity toward low-income communities most affected by lead contamination, would need to ensure aid for infrastructure upgrade.

President Joe Biden on Wednesday unveiled a sweeping 10-year plan to replace lead pipes across U.S. cities-an urgent measure to safeguard drinking water.

The move follows years of concern, especially after the Flint, Michigan, water crisis highlighted the ongoing dangers of lead contamination.

During an event in Milwaukee, Biden called the widespread use of lead pipes a “shameful” issue that should have been addressed long ago.

Lead pipes can be found in over 9 million homes and communities, and it is known to be a direct health hazard to many residents

Children exposed to lead develop developmental problems, while adults are more at risk of heart disease and high blood pressure.

The Environmental Protection Agency states that the new rule is likely to prevent several thousands of premature deaths and low birth weights annually.

“Everybody wants this lead out,” said EPA Administrator Michael Regan, referring to the urgency of the situation.

The final rule would establish a revised action level that is lower and sets clear standards for public notification and action upon detection of lead at these more stringent levels.

Despite the funding and logistic obstacles, Biden vows to stay on track. Billions of dollars will help cities reach this goal from the bipartisan infrastructure law. According to Biden, “This is about public health. It’s about protecting our children’s future.”
