Dublin Airport Expansion Plan Gets Closer to Key Milestone with 40 Million Passenger Cap Proposals

Dublin Airport’s operating firm, DAA, has submitted supplementary information to Fingal County Council and has moved a step further with its intention of taking the annual passenger cap up to 40 million by passing it.

Operator of Dublin Airport, DAA, has made great strides with the latest effort to enhance annual passenger capacity at the airport to 40 million. DAA replied in detail on 13 November 2024 to the Request for Further Information (RFI) from Fingal County Council, an important step in preparing for the project.

Submissions made that had been presented were the original Infrastructure Application (IA) deposited with the authority in December 2023 that outlined new infrastructure and sustainability investment at Dublin Airport and proposals to lift the passenger cap from 32 million to 40 million a year, consistent with national aviation policy and local development plans.

In February 2024, FCC requested additional information comprising 85 items and 415 sub-queries, reflecting the complexity of the application. To ensure a thorough response, DAA engaged national and international experts across various fields, including architecture, planning, environmental science, engineering, and sustainability. This collaborative effort underscores the project’s significance and the meticulous approach taken to address regulatory requirements.

Vincent Harrison, DAA’s Chief Commercial and Development Officer, emphasized Dublin Airport’s role as Ireland’s primary gateway and its importance in supporting connectivity and economic prosperity. He stated, “The critical infrastructure and sustainability projects included in the application set Dublin Airport and Ireland up for the future. They ensure we grow as the population does and that we can continue to meet current and future demand for travel, which is so important to our economic prosperity.”

It will be submitted in the coming days to FCC’s online planning portal, where, for the first time, it becomes publicly accessible and transparent. This marks a critical stage in the development of Dublin Airport’s expansion plans in light of increased demand and the growth of Ireland’s economy with better capacity and infrastructure provision.
