Due to errors, Apple has temporarily suspended the AI-driven news notification summaries in iOS 18.3 beta and will upgrade the feature further.

Apple has temporarily suspended its AI-driven notification summaries for news and entertainment apps in the iOS 18.3 developer beta. This move follows cases of the feature delivering incorrect summaries, which resulted in misinformation.

The Artificial Intelligence summarization function that Apple Intelligence presented was to intend condensing all multiple notifications into a summarized, concise format. It sparked criticism regarding its generation of misleading notifications. For instance, one summary even suggested the UnitedHealthcare Chief Executive Brian Thompson murderer, Luigi Mangione, had taken his own life under such circumstances, misrepresenting the main content.

Apple plans to roll out a software update meant to make clearer when notifications are AI-generated, the company announced in response to these issues. “Apple Intelligence features are in beta, and we are continually making improvements based on user feedback,” the company said. “A software update in the coming weeks will further clarify when the text being displayed is summarization provided by Apple Intelligence.”

In addition, for improved transparency, iOS 18.3 beta will label AI-generated summaries with italics and thus separate them from regular notifications. Users will also be able to disable summaries for particular apps right from the lock screen or the Notification Center.

This downtime in the AI summarize feature reflects the plight of tech firms in the use of AI technology responsibly. For instance, Apple is taking steps to perfect its AI systems, ensuring that correct and reliable information is delivered to users.
