In France, there is concern over illegally imported “aphrodisiac honey,” which is frequently laced with unapproved erectile dysfunction medications. As seizures hit all-time highs in 2024, customs officials warn of major health concerns.

French customs officials have made a shocking discovery about the influx of “aphrodisiac honey” into the nation. This substance, which is marketed as a natural sexual enhancer, is frequently contaminated with undisclosed chemical ingredients, endangering the health of users.

In 2024, a record 31,000 tons of this adulterated honey were seized, with shipments coming from countries such as Malaysia, Turkey, and Tunisia. Known as “shots” or “sticks” under names like Black Horse or Bio Max, these products are sold secretly in nightlife venues and through online channels.

Authorities caution that such innocuous-looking packets frequently contain sildenafil or tadalafil – active ingredients present in prescription medicines Viagra and Cialis.

Without any dosage regulation or proper labeling, unsuspecting consumers are potentially in for severe consequences. Severe cases of such products have already been documented by health authorities: convulsions, cerebral edema, and acute kidney injuries.

In one of the biggest seizures, 13 tons of the honey were seized by customs officers in Marseille in November when it was concealed in around 860,000 packets. Clermont-Ferrand and Lyon have also seen the seizure of smaller shipments.

The increase in demand for “aphrodisiac honey” notwithstanding its allure highlights a concerning lack of concern for safety. Authorities are warning the public to exercise caution and steer clear of uncontrolled imports that promise fast solutions at the risk of their health.
