Houston is experiencing uncommon snowfall due to Winter Storm Enzo, which has caused airport closures and numerous airline cancellations. In anticipation of ice weather and travel problems, the region has already canceled more than 1,700 flights.

With Snowfall Enzo expected to cover the Gulf Coast with up to four inches of snow overnight Monday into Tuesday, Houston is bracing for an unprecedented winter storm. Beginning Tuesday at midnight, George Bush Intercontinental and William P. Hobby airports will both be temporarily closed due to dangerous conditions.

Officials at the airport declared that their personnel are prepared to work continuously. “As soon as weather permits, Houston Airports will use snow plows and heavy equipment to clear the airfield and get ready for a safe return to operations,” they said.

Travelers are already feeling the effects. As of Monday evening, 901 flights across the U.S. had been canceled, with airlines preemptively canceling over 1,700 flights for Tuesday. United Airlines, which operates a major hub in Houston, accounted for 497 of those cancellations, while Southwest Airlines added another 409.

Some of the airlines have announced travel waivers; American, Delta, and JetBlue allow rebooking without fee. The travelers are recommended to check directly with their airlines for updates and rebooking options.

Many people’s vacation plans are also anticipated to be disrupted by the storm, forcing travelers to make last-minute itinerary changes. As Winter Storm Enzo develops, Houston ians are advised to avoid driving and plan for delays due to the forecast of slick roadways and freezing temperatures.

This unusual snowfall on the Gulf Coast serves as a clear reminder of how easily weather may disrupt travel plans, even in areas that aren’t used to winter storms.
