A Travel Deadline You Can’t Ignore
If you’re planning a trip that involves flying within the U.S., it’s time to check your wallet. A major change is coming that could stop you right at the airport gate.
After May 7, 2025, many Californians won’t be able to use their current driver’s license to board a domestic flight. Why? Because it’s not a REAL ID.
What’s a REAL ID, Anyway?
A REAL ID looks a lot like a regular driver’s license but has a special symbol, a gold bear and a star in the top-right corner. It’s part of a nationwide push to make ID standards more secure, especially for flying and entering federal buildings.
“We really want to prevent people from showing up to the airport and realizing they can’t board,” said Anita Gore, spokesperson for the California DMV. “This isn’t just a California issue—it’s national.”
If your ID doesn’t have that mark, it won’t work at the airport after May 7. You’ll need a REAL ID or a passport to get on your flight. The Transportation Security Administration says most travelers, about 81%, already use acceptable IDs like REAL IDs or passports. But that still leaves nearly 1 in 5 people at risk of being turned away at airport security for not having the right ID.
Millions Still Aren’t Ready
Even though this change has been coming for a while, almost half of California drivers still don’t have a REAL ID. That’s millions of people who could face last-minute airport surprises if they don’t upgrade in time.
How to Get One (It’s Easier Than You Think)
Getting your REAL ID isn’t hard, but you do need to visit the DMV in person. Here’s what you’ll need to bring:
- A document that proves who you are (like a birth certificate or valid passport)
- Your Social Security number
- Two documents showing your California address (like a utility bill or bank statement)
Once you have those ready, just book an appointment at your nearest DMV office. The sooner, the better; lines are expected to get longer as the deadline approaches.
Don’t Let This Ruin Your Travel Plans
Imagine packing your bags, getting to the airport, and then being told you can’t board. That’s a real possibility if your ID doesn’t meet the new rules.
So take a minute today to check your license. If it doesn’t have that little gold bear and star, now’s the time to upgrade.
