At the tail end of Sony’s CinemaCon presentation, acclaimed director Sam Mendes took the stage to unveil the ambitious and long-rumored project: a four-film cinematic event about The Beatles was officially announced. Each film will focus on one member of the legendary band.
All Four Beatles Films to Release in April 2028
Mendes confirmed that all four movies will be released in April 2028, marking what Sony Motion Pictures Chairman Tom Rothman dubbed the first-ever “bingeable moment in cinema.” Mendes didn’t disclose the release order of the films, keeping fans guessing which Beatles’ story will hit theaters first.
Rothman, clearly impressed by the scale of the undertaking, joked, “I’m getting Avatar flashbacks,” referencing the extensive production schedule required to shoot four interconnected films.
The Castings
Mendes also confirmed the cast portraying the Fab Four:
- Joseph Quinn as George Harrison
- Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney
- Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr
- Harris Dickinson as John Lennon
The four actors appeared on-screen to quote from Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band:
“It’s wonderful to be here, it’s certainly a thrill, you’re such a lovely audience, we’d like to take you home with us.”
Why Four Films? The Beatles Deserve More Than One Story
Mendes spoke candidly about his creative journey, revealing that he had tried to make a Beatles movie for years but kept hitting a wall.
“I had been trying to do a film for years, but I finally gave up,” he said, explaining that the story was just too big for one film and that a TV series didn’t feel right either.
“There had to be a way to tell the epic story for a new generation… I can assure you there is still plenty left to explore and I think we found a way to do that.”
He added that The Beatles “redefined the culture and stayed with you for a lifetime,” calling them perhaps “the most significant band of all time.”
An Epic Musical Journey, Told Like Never Before
The official logline for the project, titled The Beatles — A Four-Film Cinematic Event, reads:
“Each man has his own story, but together they are legendary.”
Mendes will produce alongside Pippa Harris and Julie Pastor of Neal Street Productions, with Alexandra Derbyshire also producing in association with Apple Corps Ltd. for Sony Pictures.
With the Fab Four’s story finally set to hit the big screen in an unprecedented way, April 2028 is shaping up to be a historic month for music and movie lovers alike.
