Following the discovery of avian flu, California health officials have recalled another batch of raw milk produced by Raw Farm LLC.
While more testing is being conducted to ascertain the degree of the contamination, consumers are advised to stay away from the impacted products.
Following the discovery of avian flu virus evidence in a fresh batch, California health officials have announced a recall of raw milk produced by Raw Farm LLC.
Following a similar incident earlier this week, raw milk in quart and half-gallon volumes with lot ID #20241109 and a best-by date of November 27 is being recalled.
Although there have been no reports of human cases of avian flu associated with the milk, the California Department of Public Health has strongly recommended consumers not to ingest the contaminated milk.
Fresno-based Raw Farm voluntarily withdrew the batch after tests showed that samples contained the H5 avian flu virus.
While testing milk items from nearby retail establishments, the Santa Clara County Public Health Laboratory discovered the virus. This is the second time the virus has been discovered in raw milk from Raw Farm in recent weeks.
Since raw milk is not pasteurized and may contain dangerous bacteria, the recall has caused worry. In view of previous outbreaks that have resulted in major health problems, public health officials continue to caution against consuming raw milk.
Health professionals advise customers to exercise caution even if the overall risk of catching avian flu is still low.
Results from more testing of Raw Farm products are anticipated shortly. In the meanwhile, the FDA has reaffirmed its cautions against the possible risks of eating raw milk, particularly in areas where avian flu outbreaks are known to occur.
