Canada Issues New Travel Guidelines for Extended U.S. Stays

Canada Issues New Travel Guidelines

Canadians Staying Over 30 Days in the U.S.? New Rule in Effect Soon!

This is an important announcement for every Canadian visiting the U.S. starting from April 11, 2025. Every Canadian who intends to spend more than 30 days in the United States is meant to register their visit for the period of their stay. Otherwise, penalties, fines, or legal action might be taken.

Why the New Rule?

The new move is part of U.S. efforts to further beef up security at borders and strengthen monitoring of long-term visitors outside the state. It applies mainly to seasonal visitors, people who travel out of Canada somewhere during winter across several months in warmer states, such as Florida, Arizona, and so on.

As well as this, they say that the process of registration is meant to secure adherence to the legislation and regulations regarding visas and entry and eventually discourage potential overstays.

How to Register?

For Canadians who will be staying for more than 30 days, an online account with U.S. immigration services will be available that will include information about their travel itinerary. Officials recommend this activity be completed ahead of travel for convenience at the border.

Failure to do so and if it is found that your stay is longer than allowed, you could face fines and/or some restrictions for future travel to the U.S.

What This Means for Travelers

Now that Canadians frequently cross the U.S. border for work, leisure, or long-term vacations, this makes it necessary for them to plan ahead. It is important:

  • Keep up to date with travel advisories for the duration of your trip.
  • Register on time online.
  • Keep records of your stay duration to avoid overstaying.

Stay Informed, Travel Smoothly

Travel rules are always changing, and so Canadians need to know what they should comply with for entry into the US. The government also encourages travelers to register with official travel advisories for timely updates and assistance during emergencies.

For those who love spending long winters down south, a little extra planning will ensure a smooth and stress-free stay.
