Disney Confirms ‘Coco 2’ Is Coming in 2029!

Disney Confirms ‘Coco 2’

Disney and Pixar officially are returning to the Land of the Dead. CEO Bob Iger confirmed at Disney’s annual shareholders’ meeting that Coco 2 is in initial development and has a release set for 2029. A sequel to Disney-Pixar’s beloved animated 2017 hit will aim to bring audiences more of that same humor, heart, and music that set the original abloom around the world.

The Story Continues

Though no plot information has been released yet, viewers can look forward to a return to the colorful world established in Coco. The first film took Miguel, a 12-year-old boy, to the Land of the Dead on Día de los Muertos to discover his family history and become a musician.

The 2017 movie was a blockbuster, grossing more than $800 million at the worldwide box office and picking up two Oscars, including Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for “Remember Me.

The original Team Is Back

Coco 2 will reunite the team behind the original. Lee Unkrich, who directed the first film, returns to co-direct with Adrian Molina, who also co-wrote and co-directed Coco. Mark Nielsen, known for Toy Story 4 and Inside Out 2, will produce the film.

Disney teased the announcement on social media as well.

Pixar Is Betting Big on Sequels

The announcement of Coco 2 comes as Pixar continues to focus on sequels to its most beloved titles. Recent hits like Inside Out 2 have broken box office records, with the film earning $1.66 billion, surpassing Incredibles 2 as Pixar’s highest-grossing release.

Pixar is also developing Toy Story 5, Incredibles 3, and original titles like Elio and Hoppers. However, compared to its original stories and spinoffs (Elemental, Lightyear), sequels have clearly proven to be more commercially successful for the studio.

What to Expect From Coco 2

Bob Iger didn’t reveal much about the storyline but promised that the new film would be full of “humor, heart, and adventure.” With the original’s legacy and fanbase still going strong, expectations are sky-high for what’s next in Miguel’s journey and fans have a few years to let the excitement build before 2029 arrives.
