Costco is recalling over 10,000 cartons of Kirkland Signature organic eggs because they may contain salmonella.
Customers are encouraged to return the eggs for a refund even if no illnesses have been reported as of yet.
Due to possible salmonella contamination, Costco stores in five Southern states have recently recalled more than 10,000 cartons of organic eggs bearing the Kirkland Signature brand.
Beginning on November 22, the eggs provided by organic egg manufacturer Handsome Brook Farms in New York were sent to Costco stores in Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee.
The recalled eggs are pasture-raised, organic, and have a use-by date of January 5, 2025. They are packaged in 24-count cartons bearing the numbers 327 and P1363.
The company is taking the precautionary step of announcing the recall even though no illnesses have been recorded.
This is because the eggs were packaged incorrectly and sent to stores even though they weren’t meant for sale.
A bacterial infection called salmonella can cause serious symptoms like fever, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting, particularly in susceptible populations like children, the elderly, and people with compromised immune systems.
It is recommended that customers who bought the recalled eggs either throw them away or return them to Costco for a complete refund.
Additional controls and staff retraining are among the safety precautions that Handsome Brook Farms has put in place to stop such events in the future.
