Many passengers think that cruising is a way to unwind—until they are surrounded by people, crowded swimming pools, and kids playing.

In order to provide passengers with a more tranquil getaway, cruise lines are progressively implementing adults-only areas.

On Carnival Celebration’s Serenity Adult-Only Retreat, frequent cruiser Randy Young found the ideal getaway. “Entering Serenity felt like entering a private oasis, but walking through the main pool was chaos,” he said.

The area, which is only open to people 21 and up, has a pool, lounge chairs, and a bar.

Cruise lines are getting in on the trend. Royal Caribbean’s Solarium features a serene lounge with whirlpools, and CocoCay’s Hideaway Beach offers an exclusive, adults-only beach experience.

Disney Cruise Line has also set aside child-free areas, including private pools and lounges.

While some of these facilities are part of the cruise price, others—such as Norwegian’s Vibe Beach Club or MSC’s Aurea Spa—are additional.

For totally kid-free cruising, Virgin Voyages features just adults-only sailing. But for travelers who nonetheless want the benefits of the big-ship life, these in-port sanctuaries give the best of everything adventure on your own terms, calm when you want it.
