A Trailer Packed With Thrills, Nostalgia, and Near-Death Stunts
The first trailer for the film celebrates the franchise’s legacy, revisiting iconic moments like Ethan Hunt’s stealthy CIA break-in and the Kremlin bombing from earlier parts. But new footage quickly takes over, showing Cruise trapped in a coffin-like machine powered by the rogue AI from Dead Reckoning Part One, dangling from a biplane, and submerged in a flooding submarine.
The trailer closes with Cruise’s signature intensity as he says:
“I need you to trust me, one last time.”
One Last Mission With Even Bigger Stakes
The Final Reckoning is being directed by Christopher McQuarrie, who co-wrote the script with Erik Jendresen. The cast includes returning stars Simon Pegg, Vanessa Kirby, Hayley Atwell, and Pom Klementieff, along with new additions like Nick Offerman and Hannah Waddingham.
This film was originally titled Dead Reckoning Part Two, but it’s been renamed to The Final Reckoning. This decision has been taken to feel more like a standalone experience, especially after Part One earned slightly less than expected compared to 2018’s Fallout, the franchise’s biggest hit.
Pushing Physical Limits (Again)
No Mission: Impossible movie is complete without Tom Cruise putting himself in real danger. This time, Cruise filmed an underwater sequence that required him to hold his breath for up to ten minutes.
“I’m breathing in my own carbon dioxide,” Cruise told Empire. “It builds up in the body and affects the muscles. You have to overcome all of that while you’re doing it, and be present.”
A Moment of Respect and Recognition
Before premiering the trailer at CinemaCon’s Colosseum theater in Las Vegas, Cruise led the audience in a moment of silence for the late Val Kilmer. He also surprised the crowd by presenting McQuarrie with a CinemaCon award, recognizing their longtime creative partnership.
Release Date
Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning hits theaters on Friday, May 23, 2025, and promises the kind of jaw-dropping spectacle fans have come to expect from Cruise and crew, with maybe a little more emotion and legacy built in.
