NASA astronauts aboard the ISS share their Thanksgiving message, expressing gratitude for zero gravity, their unique work environment, and the beauty of Earth. Learn more about their holiday celebrations in space.

As Americans gather this Thanksgiving, NASA astronauts on board the International Space Station have transmitted a special thank-you message from orbit. Miles from family members orbiting 250 miles above Earth, Expedition 72 crew members shared heartfelt thanks for the privilege of working in space and notably for “zero gravity.”

In a NASA video message, astronauts said that living in such an unusual working environment on the ISS gave them a better appreciation of life on Earth. They said they appreciate the beauty of the planet they observe daily from their orbital vantage point and reflected on how important it is to take care of the Earth’s fragile ecosystem.

Even during Thanksgiving time, they talk about having fun over space Thanksgiving; special treats have come in addition to turkey and cranberry sauce, pumpkin spice cappuccinos—food brought to them via SpaceX’s Dragon resupply mission. It is their “dining experience” so different from on earth because in microgravity they have to use Velcro and magnets to hold on to the meals so they won’t float away.

The astronauts noted that despite their physical distances from families, holiday will help them reflect who they value and what matters to them in life. “We are grateful for the privilege of serving our nation and the good health and safety of our family and friends back home,” said astronaut Jasmin Moghbeli while narrating a video clip for Thanksgiving Day.

As they feast in space, they remind us of the need to celebrate and how much we are aware of the problems we face back here on Earth. Their message: “We thank God for zero gravity, but most of all, we are thankful for our Earth and for the people we’re fighting hard to protect.
