And indeed, it was a hard-fought Monday Night Football game that ended up favoring the Pittsburgh Steelers on their way to taking down the New York Giants for a 24-17 victory. It is no contest of two teams when some team features a great defense on top of some explosive plays, and one final play of heroics would move the Steelers to 5-2 on the season.
With only a few minutes left in the game, into the fourth quarter, it was the Giants driving the field and appearing headed to take the lead of the game or at the very least tie it for the tying score. Giants quarterback Daniel Jones had his rhythm as he completed a run of rapid completions, placing the Giant’s offense on Steeler’s defense.
But with only 35 seconds remaining in the game, Steelers safety Minkah Fitzpatrick jumped in front of Jones’ intended receiver to snag the game-winning interception that sent Steelers Nation into a frenzy.
“It was a tough game, but we knew we had to make a play when it mattered most,” Fitzpatrick said after the game. “Our defense prides itself on making big plays in crucial moments, and tonight we delivered.”
It wasn’t an easy win for the Steelers, though. The Giant’s defense was very tough, led by the stellar linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux, who harassed Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett all game, sacking him three times and forcing a fumble. Pickett, though, stood up to the test with poise, and his 45-yard touchdown catch from wide receiver Diontae Johnson in the third quarter proved pivotal in building Pittsburgh’s lead.
It was a tight loss for the Giants. Jones passed for 275 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. Saquon Barkley rushed for 85 yards, but it wasn’t enough to help get the Giants in the end zone, sealing their chances for a comeback.
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin: “I just think the resiliency of this football team showed tonight.”.
We had some adversity in that respect, but this is what makes our team special. They dig deep, they don’t flinch, and they find ways to win.
The win has pushed the Steelers deeper in their pursuit of the playoffs, as the Giants remain free-falling, with the record now 3-5. They need a chance to catch some air for the next week or so. And in yet another Monday night falling away to another, the defense did the job yet again, allowing Pittsburgh yet another scrappy win on a tough evening.
