The viral ghost-hunting game Phasmophobia is headed to the big screen. Horror powerhouse Blumhouse is developing a film adaptation of the multiplayer sensation, teaming up with Stray Kite Studios and Triple A Pictures for the project.
Blumhouse is working directly with the game’s original creators, Kinetic Games, to bring the same eerie tension and supernatural scares that turned Phasmophobia into a streaming hit.
A Paranormal Story Built for the Screen
While plot details are still under wraps, the film is expected to stick closely to the game’s premise: a team of paranormal investigators enters haunted locations armed with ghost-hunting tools like spirit boxes, EMF readers, and thermal cameras. Their job is to track the spirit down before it finds them first.
The slow-building dread, unpredictable hauntings, and team-based gameplay made Phasmophobia a fan favorite when it launched in early access in 2020. It shot to popularity thanks to Twitch streamers and YouTubers who helped the game go viral during the pandemic lockdowns.
Gaming and Horror Collide
The film will be produced under the Blumhouse Games label, a branch of the studio focused on adapting video game IPs into films. Stray Kite Studios, best known for their work on Netflix’s Arcane, and Triple A Pictures are also co-producers.
The move is part of a broader push by Blumhouse into gaming-related content. Following their success with the Five Nights at Freddy’s film, this adaptation of Phasmophobia is the next step in blending game fandoms with horror cinema.
No Cast Yet, But the Atmosphere’s Already Set
Casting hasn’t been announced, and no release date has been set. But with the game’s massive audience and Blumhouse’s track record, the film can potentially draw both hardcore fans and horror newcomers.
Kinetic Games has been keeping Phasmophobia fresh with regular updates, adding new ghosts, maps, and features. The film will likely build on this evolving universe, offering longtime players a deeper dive into the lore they’ve only glimpsed in-game.
