Rihanna and A$AP Rocky made eyes on a drizzly evening in Cannes- not only for fashion, but for a moment that looked like it belonged in a romance novel.
On Monday, May 19, the pair made their entrance at the Cannes Film Festival during a shower of rain. Rihanna, radiant in neon blue Alaïa, was as beautiful as ever. By her side stood Rocky, all in a sleek black suit and tie, looming over her with a gigantic umbrella to shield her from the rain.
The considerate gesture immediately reminded people of a now-notorious photo in 2020, when Prince Harry shielded Meghan Markle from the rain using an umbrella as the couple entered a London charity gala. Meghan was also wearing a turquoise dress that night, the same shade as Rihanna’s dress, and Harry had the same blinding smile Rocky had on the red carpet.
It was fortunate that the timing worked out. On that same day, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were celebrating their 7th wedding anniversary. Meghan took to social media and shared a touching post: “Seven years of marriage. A lifetime of stories,” she penned. “Thanks to all of you (whether by our side, or from afar) who have loved and supported us throughout our love story- we appreciate you. Happy anniversary!”
While all this was going on, back in France, Rihanna wasn’t merely dressing up to make a fashion statement- she was also happily displaying her expanding baby bump. Rihanna is expecting her third child with A$AP Rocky. The couple already have two boys- RZA (3) and Riot (2)- and announced the news last month when Rihanna attended the Met Gala.
This Cannes stopover was Rihanna’s first in eight years. She was at the event to show up for Rocky at the premiere of his new film Highest 2 Lowest, which is a crime thriller movie directed by Spike Lee. After screening, the two left the cinema hand-in-hand, giving fans another cute moment to treasure.
A$AP Rocky was a guest last week on Late Night with Seth Meyers, where he shared that the couple has a habit of naming their children “R” names. Seth quipped, “Your first two kids have ‘R’ names, clearly you and Rihanna have ‘R’ names. Is this a sure thing that the third has an ‘R’ name, do you think?” Rocky responded quickly: “For sure.
The couple had kept the pregnancy private for a while, but after it was revealed, Rocky shared his excitement with the Associated Press. “It feels amazing, you know,” he said. “It’s time that we show the people what we was cooking up. And I’m glad everybody’s happy for us ’cause we definitely happy, you know.”
Rihanna also recently spoke out about motherhood in an interview with Elle in April. She’s obviously willing to have more children. “[I’ll have] as many children as God would like me to have,” she explained. “I don’t know what God wants, but I would do more than two. I would attempt for my girl. But of course if it’s another boy, it’s another boy.”
