This change coincides with the upcoming revision of official nutrition standards, which were last revised in 2020, and new research highlighting the possible negative effects of even moderate alcohol use.
According to Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy, alcohol is a “direct and preventable cause” of more than 100,000 cancer cases in the US each year, supporting recent research that links alcohol to the disease.
Even one or two drinks per day may have serious health effects, according to growing data, even though excessive and binge drinking have long been recognized as serious health hazards.
It’s interesting to note that sentiments differ by gender and age. Moderate drinking is more likely to be seen as hazardous by women and younger persons under 45, which is indicative of a larger cultural shift.
