Sid Meier’s Civilization VII, the latest installment to the legendary turn-based strategy game series, is now available on a variety of platforms, such as PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch. The February 11, 2025, release introduces key innovations while preserving the key elements that have enthralled players for over three decades.
Evolving Through Distinct Ages
One of the standout advancements in Civilization VII is that the gameplay is now divided into three eras: Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern. Each of these eras has special civilizations, leaders, and gameplay features, which contribute to a thrust by the players to adapt their strategy to match. The transition from one era to another takes the form of global crises, i.e., invasions or rebellions, that add to the gameplay experience in terms of depth and complexity.
Innovative Leader and Civilization Dynamics
Leaders and civilizations are selected independently for the first time in series history. This feature gives players the power to pair any leader with any civilization of the same era, giving them unprecedented strategic flexibility. Leaders each have their own individual skill trees that develop as players move from age to age, creating personalized gameplay experiences.
Immersive Virtual Reality Experience
Emerging from the normal platforms, Civilization VII will also be coming out in a virtual reality version only for Meta Quest 3 and 3S headsets in Spring 2025. The VR version offers an immersive perspective, where the players can engage with their civilizations in a board game-like setup projected into their real space or within a virtual museum environment. The VR version shares the same core gameplay but features new ways of engaging with the game world.

Civilization VII can be found in a number of different editions to suit different players’ needs:
Standard Edition: The base game with the full core experience.
Deluxe Edition: Includes additional leaders, civilizations, and cosmetic items for extra gameplay improvement.
Founders Edition: Includes all Deluxe features with in-game-only bonuses and customizations.
Collector’s Edition: Exclusive premium package for PC players, featuring all of the Founders content in addition to physical goodies such as a challenge coin, figurine, and decorative clock.
