Sony Removes ‘Street Fighter’ from Schedule, Renames Shark Thriller

Sony Pictures is shaking up its film release calendar once again. The studio has officially removed the upcoming ‘Street Fighter’ live-action film from its schedule, just weeks after naming Emmy-nominated director Kitao Sakurai to helm the project.

They has also retitled and rescheduled its shark thriller film ‘Beneath the Storm’ to now be called ‘Shiver’, with a new release date of July 3, 2026.

‘Shiver’ Swims into Summer Blockbuster Slot

Beneath The Storm movie was originally set for August 1, 2025. Now this shark thriller movie has been pushed to July 3, 2026, with a new name ‘Shiver’, aligning it with the Independence Day holiday weekend.

This film is directed by Tommy Wirkola (Violent Night) and stars Phoebe Dynevor, alongside Whitney Peak and Djimon Hounsou. While the plot remains unrevealed, the film is expected to dive into high-stakes, shark-driven suspense.

Production credits include Adam McKay and Kevin Messick of Hyperobject Industries, with D. Scott Lumpkin on board as executive producer.

Shiver’ is now set to compete directly with Universal’s next Minions movie, which is slated for release just two days earlier, on July 1, 2026.

‘Street Fighter’ Delayed as Sony-Legendary Deal Ends

Sony has also removed the live-action ‘Street Fighter’ film from its calendar. The movie was based on the classic Capcom fighting game franchise and was previously set to debut on March 20, 2026. The removal follows the expiration of Sony’s global distribution deal with Legendary on December 31, 2023.

The film had recently added Kitao Sakurai (Bad Trip) as director, taking over from the Philippou brothers (Talk to Me), who were previously attached to the project. It’s being co-developed and co-produced with Capcom, although the new timeline for the project remains uncertain.

A Franchise with History

Street Fighter’ has a storied past in film and television. The first live-action adaptation debuted in 1994, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, Ming-Na Wen, and Raul Julia in his final on-screen performance. While critically panned, Julia’s portrayal of M. Bison remains beloved.

Since then, the franchise has inspired multiple live-action and animated films, TV series, manga, and comics, solidifying its place in pop culture history. Fans still hope this latest reboot will deliver the faithful adaptation they’ve long been waiting for whenever it finally arrives.

What’s Next for ‘Street Fighter’?

The fate of Street Fighter remains uncertain for now, but fans are still hopeful. With Capcom involved and Sakurai on board as director, the potential for a more faithful and thrilling adaptation remains alive.

For now, Shiver is shaping up to be a summer blockbuster contender, while Street Fighter steps back into development limbo, at least for the moment.
