Syrian and Russian aircraft have intensified their airstrikes of opposition-controlled neighborhoods in Aleppo to key rebel targets in the battle as the opposition advances towards the aim of seizing control of vast sections of the war-ravaged city. This is a milestone in the Syrian conflict that started five years ago, and each side is attempting to seize one of the country’s most vital cities.
According to local informants clearing the scene, several fuel-air explosions hit home areas, markets, and any structures that tumbled like playing cards, with fatalities topping 50 and scores more in critical conditions. The human rights organization stated that in the last two days, more than fifty non-combatants – women and children were killed, the number of victims is increasing as rescuers clear the rubble of constant airstrikes.
Syrian insurgents backed by the Free Syrian Army and supported by Islamist fighters have capitalized on these gains to occupy a large part of eastern Aleppo. “We are advancing even under intense attacks,” explained one of the representatives of the opposition forces, adding that the rebels have liberated most of the government checkpoints around Konduga.
Consequently, the forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, with the intensive air support provided by Russian aviation, started an aggressive counter-operation, the main of which was to retake lost territories. It has focused on supplies, ammunition, and control posts to disarm and immobilize the rebels in the process.
“Catastrophic” conditions inside the city of Aleppo as hostilities intensify are already bad, warns agencies that deliver humanitarian assistance there. The city has remained under siege for months now as little access to foodstuffs, medicine, or any other essential thing could be availed to inhabitants there.
There is also a split reaction internationally from these escalations. Western nations have censured airstrikes, where Russia and Syria allegedly indiscriminately bomb targets. Moscow then defends its military actions through the broader strategy of addressing terrorism and maintaining support towards Assad’s regime.
As the battle for Aleppo continues, analysts say the city’s fate could have far-reaching implications for the Syrian conflict. “Whoever controls Aleppo controls a vital piece of Syria’s future,” said [Insert Analyst Name].
For now, the skies over Aleppo remain a battleground, with little hope for a ceasefire in sight.
