Thailand’s New Visa Rules from May 2025: What Every Traveler Needs to Know

Thailand's New Visa Rules from May 2025

Thailand is changing how tourists, students, and remote workers enter the country starting May 2025. From digital arrival cards to shorter visa-free stays, here’s what every traveler should know before packing their bags.

If Thailand is on your travel list in 2025, there are some important changes you’ll want to know about before booking your flight. Starting in May, the country is introducing new visa and entry rules that will affect tourists, students, remote workers, and long-term visitors.

Digital Forms Are Replacing Paperwork

One of the biggest changes is the end of the old arrival card. Travelers now need to fill out a Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online at least three days before their trip. It includes basic travel details, accommodation info, and a quick health check. Once approved, you’ll receive a QR code to show at immigration. Skip it, and you might be denied entry.

New Pre-Travel Approval for Some Visitors

From June 2025, people from visa-exempt countries (who normally don’t need a visa to visit Thailand) will now need to apply for a free Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) online. It’s a simple process and once approved, you’ll also get a QR code to speed up immigration checks.

Thailand is also reducing the length of stay for travelers from many countries who enter without a visa. Instead of the present 60-day residence, visitors will be permitted only a stay of 30 days. This is aimed at reducing misuse of the visa-free option.

More Options for Long-Term Visitors

Good news for digital nomads and students! Thailand is rolling out new visa options:

Destination Thailand Visa: A 5-year visa that allows up to 180 days per visit, perfect for remote workers and those learning Thai culture or sports.

Post-Study Visa: Graduates from Thai universities can now stay an extra year to work or travel.

Lower Health Insurance Requirements: For certain long-term visas, the minimum health insurance needed has been reduced, making it more affordable.

Tourist Visas Now Require Financial Proof

You will now be asked to provide evidence that you are able to support yourself financially throughout your visit when you apply for an ordinary tourist visa. This requirement had been paused but is now back in May.

In short, Thailand is making travel easier for serious visitors and digital nomads while tightening rules for short-term tourists. If you’re planning a trip, make sure you’re up to date with the latest requirements.
