Los Angeles wildfires destroy homes and neighborhoods, but the damage to people’s mental health can last for years. While dealing with the physical fallout from these catastrophes, experts stress the significance of treating mental trauma.

The destruction caused by the flames that are raging over Los Angeles goes much beyond the burned-out remnants of houses and communities. Long after the fire is put out, many people still feel the mental scars that natural disasters leave behind.

As a psychiatrist and specialist in mental health and climate change, Dr. Jyoti Mishra has personal experience with the psychological toll that wildfires can have. Her family recently evacuated to her house in San Diego from Los Angeles.

She said, “We’re relieved they’re safe, but the uncertainty about what will happen to their home is overwhelming.”

Research shows that wildfires have a significant negative influence on mental health. Research on the 2018 Camp Fire revealed that survivors had higher than average levels of anxiety, despair, and PTSD. Those who have been exposed to catastrophic events or continuous smoke inhalation may experience these consequences for months or even years.

Environmental health specialist Dr. Yang Liu highlights that the smoke from wildfires can increase anxiety on its own. He said, “LA’s air quality is 10 to 20 times above normal, which has a significant impact on mental health.”

Dr. Sabrina Renteria, a psychiatrist, believes children are particularly at risk. They need open and honest conversation about the situation because they perceive distress around them. It’s crucial to establish healthy coping strategies like mindfulness and family connection as well as to restore routines.

Experts stress the importance of community in recovery and call for group healing and support. “With climate change, this isn’t isolated to one region,” says Dr. Mishra. We flourish in the face of hardship when we help one another.

Seeking support and maintaining relationships with loved ones are essential elements in the healing process for individuals impacted.
