Former president of the United States Donald Trump has pulled the United States of America out of the World Health Organization, WHO this has sparked renowned discussion on the question of how the USA will lead or contribute to the health of others in the global village. Trump announced the decision in a rally blaming WHO for its failures and alleged pro-China bias during the COVID-19 pandemic.
This decision has echoed the words that Trump made when he first threatened to pull out of the organization. He then said during his presidency, the WHO had poorly managed the initial response and did not hold China accountable for the pandemic outbreak.
During his speech, Trump was blunt: “The WHO has become a PA of China, and the American people deserve much better.” ”There is no justification for allowing another 2 to $3 billion in taxpayer money to be spent to prop up an organization that has demonstrated disdain for the principles of transparency and accountability,”
Concerning withdrawal, the US would be stopping its monetary support to the WHO but transferring the money to other uses at home or other health-related programs in other international organizations.
Controversy over the decision has raised criticism from health professionals, and political rivals, who termed the move as a great threat to global health safety and reduced capacity of America to handle future pandemics. The former Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Dr. Anthony Fauci opposed the move, telling Axios that the move is shortsighted since it may lead to excluding the U.S. from key scientific health networks.
In the global arena, other leaders and international organizations have urged the U.S. to change tact. The EU stated that combating threats such as infectious disease requires international cooperation, and WHO recalled that it is ready to work with every state.
The action is probably being taken to satisfy his followers who have long been suspicious of global bodies for years. The former president has made the declaration as he builds up the campaign for the possibility of his third tenure at the White House in 2025.
Supporters of the decision believe that it will come in handy under Trump’s “America First” policy that prefers sovereignty over overcommitments under international treaties. However, as with all short-term solutions, critics question the long-term impact and state that the long-term effects may include reduced international power and reduced health diplomacy.
The world shall wait and watch as the U.S. makes this critical moment between feeding domestic demand and staying a world power. On these grounds, one can only hope that this particular strategy brings forth the reality of Trump’s dream as against a new set of challenges.
