With their Fantasy Flights, United Airlines turns vacation fantasies into reality by transporting worthy families to a joyous “North Pole” experience.
This touching voyage, complete with a decorated jet and presents from Santa, brings happiness to kids dealing with the most difficult situations in life.
At Honolulu International Airport, the day wasn’t typical. The passengers on United Airlines Flight 3894 were in for a surprise as the aircraft got ready to take off.
Children and adults alike cheered when the pilot declared, “We’re headed to Christmas Island.”
Being a part of United’s Fantasy Flights, an annual tradition that brings holiday cheer to families that need it most, this flight was anything but ordinary.
Children with life-threatening conditions or mourning the loss of a loved one were invited for this unique experience with the assistance of nearby hospitals and nonprofit organizations.
The 30-minute flight passed over Molokai and Maui before “landing” at the North Pole, complete with holiday decorations, snack packs, and upbeat music.
Children entered a winter wonderland in a converted hangar in Honolulu, complete with games, face painting, live performances, and a special meal. Santa individually brought each child a present from their wish list.
Alex Wereszczynskyj of HUGS Hawaii, a partner group, stated that for many people, this is an experience of a lifetime.
Families, including the Mailos, who were on their first trip since the outbreak, were thankful for the enchanted getaway.
According to Leslie Ann Mailo, whose son Amadeus has been fighting cancer, “it’s amazing, really magical.”
The event was made possible by more than 150 volunteers, including United employees. This year, Fantasy Flights will continue to bring holiday cheer to those in need by landing in places all around the world.
